SHORT STORY 1

The Short Story I read was Thank you M'am,by Langston Hughes. In this short story an woman by the name Mrs.Luella Bates Washington Jones was walking late at night about eleven o'clock in the dark and suddenly an boy came up and grabed her purse off of her shoulders and tried to run with it but he couldnt. After the boy ran with her purse she got her purse back and jacked the boy up. They didnt know each other at the time, and the Mrs. Jones took the boy home and asked him questions and fead him and gave him money. Mrs. Jones had figured out all of the boy problems and talked with him over them. While talking to him, she asked him whats his name and she told her Roger,so thats how she figured out his name. She forgave the boy for grabbing her purse and she told him she dosen't want to hear about him grabbing anyone else purse.

I think that this is an great short story, it explained everything well with good ideas. When she took the boy home with her, I think that she was an nice person to do that. She sounds like shes an carring lady. She fead the boy ,he washed his face ,and she gave him some money. I think it was wrong for the boy to grab the lady purse in the first place , and thats not the right thing to do. So I enjoyed the short story.

2)What I think about the character Mrs.Jones, is that she's nice because she didnt take the boy to the police, she feed him and she used this quote "Now here ,take this ten dollars and buy some blue suede shoes". The boy Roger,I think that he's a boy that needs attention, because Mrs.Jones asked him have he eaten supper, and he replied with this quote "There's nobody home at my house".

3)The author only describe Mrs.Jones as an large lady, and the author didnt tell you what she was like, so i fugured out what she was like in this quote,"I was young once and I wanted things I couldnt get."That quote tells me that she kind of knows where the boy comes from. The author tells me what the boy is about ,because in this quote."There's nobody at my house", that means that the boy parents probaly doesent care about him,and he's just out doing what ever he wants.

4. Define the following. You will find these definitions in the back of a literture textbook.

simile -a figure of speech in which two unlike things are explicitly compared

metaphor- a figure of speech that makes a comparison between two unlike things without the use of comperisons such as like, as, than, or resembles.

personification -the attribution of a personal nature or character to inanimate objects or abstract notions

allusion -passing reference or indirect mention

hyperbole -an extravagant statement or figure of speech not intended to be taken literally

irony - the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning: the irony of her reply, “How nice!” when I said I had to work all weekend.

5)Something I found in this short story that was irony is when the lady took the boy home using this quote, "Then it will get washed this evening," said the large woman, starting up the street, dragging the frightened boy behind her. She took the boy home with her, thats irony because usually people wouldnt do that.
